Construction Materials Engineering and Testing is a critical component in the process of taking a structure off the blueprint and making it a reality. Our clients have come to depend on GMT’s materials engineering and testing staff of professionals to protect their interests during the construction phases of their projects. At GMT, we are acutely aware that inaccurate subsurface/geological evaluations and construction delays translate into extra costs. Our team of engineers and engineering technicians help our clients anticipate and minimize potential issues and delays.

As a client, you can expect rapid, individualized response and defensible, accurate results when contracting for construction materials testing. We specialize in testing and analysis of the properties and performance behavior of soils and mechanical, hydraulic and physical testing of all forms of materials used in the construction. GMT works as part of your construction team to keep your project on track. Our firm brings wide-ranging experience in materials engineering evaluation, testing and inspection to every project.

Our services include, but not limited to, are as follows:

  • Inspection and testing services during installation of caisson/drilled shaft foundations
    • On-site determination of capacity of bearing soils
  • Monitoring and testing during backfilling operations
    • Assessment of subgrade soils including testing of soils, proof-rolling, etc.
    • Provide on-site recommendations for any subgrade improvement
    • Laboratory testing of any new fill materials for their gradation characteristics and Proctor Densities
    • Compaction testing of the fill materials during their placement using nuclear density gauge
  • Inspection and testing of concrete, mortar, grout, and asphalt during placement

    • Perform inspection of asphalt placement
    • Testing of asphalt for its density using nuclear gauge
  • Inspection and testing of structural steel during erection
    • Testing of bolts for the required strength (Torque)
    • Testing of welded joints
  • Laboratory testing services to support field inspection services
    • Performing classification tests on cohesive soils including particle size analyses (Sieve and Hydrometer Analysis) and determining Atterberg limits
    • Performing Standard and Modified Proctor Densities
    • If required, perform permeability tests on granular soils (constant head), falling head and raising tail methods on cohesive soils.
    • Perform laboratory tests for the compressive strength of concrete cylinders, mortar cubes, and grout cylinders.
    • If required, perform CBR/IBR Tests for the sub-base soils
    • Determine Bulk Specific Gravity, Maximum Specific Gravity, Percent of voids, Percent of Asphalt (Ignition and Solvent Extraction) on Asphalt samples
